Sad news

We had some horrible news over the weekend. Linda's mom, Twila, passed away due to complications from a sudden illness. This was such a shock to all of us because even at the age of 79 she was so healthy and vibrant. She really was such a beautiful and loving woman. I wrote recently about visiting Capital Reef National Park where they have preserved the house she grew up in, and this makes me really want to go back again soon to see it! Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers! Especially her husband, Duane who isn't doing too well. Here is her obituary:

Twila G. Mattsson

Twila G. Mattsson 1929 ~ 2008 Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and best friend died on September 13, 2008 at St. Mark's Hospital due to complications from a sudden illness.Twila Gifford Mattsson was born on January 9, 1929 to Dewey and Pernellie Gifford in Salina, Utah at her grandmother's house. Twila grew up in Fruita, Utah on a pioneering homestead in what is now Capital Reef National Park. Her childhood home is known as the Historic Gifford Homestead, which just celebrated its 100-year centennial where she was featured and honored as one of the children who grew up in the home. She climbed the red rock hills, picked fruit, played in the Fremont River, rode horses and went to grade school in the little one-room schoolhouse in Fruita. She lived with her grandmother in Salina while she attended high school. She graduated from North Sevier High School in 1946 and worked as a waitress at Mom's Café in Salina. She married her soul mate and best friend, Duane J. Mattsson, on November 13, 1949. They resided in Salina until 1959, when they moved to Kearns, Utah, where they raised their family. In 1977 Twila and Duane built a cabin in Torrey, Utah. Their home was an award-winning showpiece with hundreds of flowers and a large garden and orchard. They opened their cabin to their family and friends and spent many happy years at the cabin with their children and grandchildren. Twila and Duane loved to travel and would spend a few months each year in Kauai with their daughter Katrina. They traveled to Europe, Alaska, Russia, Scandinavia and Mexico. Twila was an accomplished seamstress and created beautiful embroidery and needlework. She was always cooking delicious meals for her family and had many signature dishes that were the cornerstone of all family get-togethers. Twila was warm, loving, smart, funny, and was the heart of our family. She was generous with her time, love and wisdom. She was devoted to and loved being surrounded by her family. Her beautiful heart touched everyone she met. We cannot imagine our lives without her. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Duane Mattsson; daughters Linda (Ed) Blake, Katrina "Christy" Raphaell, Kelly (Rick) Valleley, and son, Lane Mattsson. She is also survived by her loving and devoted grandchildren Kincade (Janelle) Bauer, Simran Raphaell, Shanda (Jeramie) Wootton, Payton Valleley and Dahlia Valleley and her brothers Fay (Dessma) Gifford and Dale (Carolyn) Gifford, sister-in-law and dear friend Jean Gifford; numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, brother Lloyd Gifford and grandson Gentry Bauer. Services will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Garner Funeral Home, 1001 East 11th Avenue, Salt Lake City. A viewing will be held from 11:30 to 1 before the services.

18 months

I cannot believe Bailey is 18 months old now! CRAZY! What is so weird too is that since labor day all of the sudden she SEEMS sooo much older. She is starting to talk like crazy. Sad though for the most part she calls me Jenny :( She is so independent as well. Chris and I have been hiking local hikes a lot and we went on a hike to donut falls and all Bailey wanted to do was walk herself, so we let her and she seriously did so good! She amazes us everyday!

She finally lets me do her hair!!

Lisa came over yesterday and we made some (lowfat) cookies, Bailey loved standing on a chair helping us! What a darling!

ADAM!

Yesterday was Adam's official birthday! {He celebrates his birthday for about 2 weeks...kidding!} So yesterday he had to work at his normal job and then was a bartender at the yummiest restaurant called Rio Grand. We decided it would be fun if we all went to dinner there to celebrate his birthday! So me Chris, Bailey, Ed, Linda, Erin, Shanda, Jeramie, Brock and Madi met up and had dinner! It was so fun and we all got to sing Happy Birthday to him with all of the waiters. Bailey was her usual self not wanting to sit at all so we took turns walking with her and showing her the choo choo train that goes around the bar Ad makes margaritas at. What an awesome night! We LOVE you Adam! We are so lucky to have you as a brother and uncle! P.S. We are off to celebrate his birthday again tonight! How lucky is he!

I love this picture of Adam and Lisa... this was taken in Yellowstone 2 years ago when we went there for labor day. {I have it framed at my house}
Typical Adam at a party at Ed and Linda's house!

Last summer trip

Every labor day weekend (minus a couple years when we went to Yellowstone with friends) our family heads to Capital reef for a camping trip. We camp on the Boulder Mountain and we always have the funnest time. Chris and his family have been going there for years and years because their family had a cabin in Torrey. This year it rained pretty much the whole time so we didn't do any hikes :( but we still had a blast at camp and driving into the park to check out the beautiful rock formations.

The first night we were there we got in pretty late and Bailey was asleep so we all hung out by the camp fire. I was pretty terrified because we heard an animal making loud noises not too far away. I thought it sounded like an elk because we saw one on a horseback ride in Yellowstone and it made a similar noise. Everyone promised me that we would be safe! Well the next morning everyone delighted in telling me that for sure it was a black bear uhhh scary! (They were totally serious!!!) When I took Bailey on a walk around the camp site in her stroller we came across a ton of cows and I put two and two together and realized that they were the ones making all the noises and I had nothing to worry about. What a relief haha! The first day was probably the nicest as far as the weather goes. We hung out around the camp enjoying Ed's bloody Mary's, the guys played horse shoes and they girls chit chatted all day! It was fabulous and I wasn't totally exhausted at this point! We went down into Torrey and checked out Ed and Linda's land and talked about our plans to build a cabin there, which I insist will have a huge tree house for Bailey and her cousins to play in! Ahhh, Can't wait for all the fun that will bring! We went and checked out Linda's families house that has been preserved and is now the museum and gift shop. It is soooo cute! In the house there is the cutest picture of Linda as a baby with her Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma. I love going in that house and they have the BEST homemade icecream and pickled asparagas that we MUST have each time we go!

Hanging out at camp the first day...no rain yet!

Our own personal chef... he is a fabulous cook by the way!
How many men does it take to start the bbq? All of them of course!
Cade and our preggers cousin Shanda! It was a crackup all weekend as Linda would always say "leave Shanda alone... she is busy making fingernails!"
We love the nights by the fire! Here is Bailey with her Grandma and Gramps!
This weekend Bailey was pointing to Ed while we were in the car and said Hi! I said "Say hi Grandpa!" At that point she said "Hi Papa!!!" And now she won't stop! Sooo cute!

Adam putting out our fire....I don't know why but this picture is so funny to me!
The next day we woke up to a lot of rain but that didn't stop us from having fun! I was so tired from staying up with everyone the night before and then Bailey never sleeps well camping so we were up pretty much when it got light in the morning! Thanks to Ed and Linda for playing with her and letting me get a little more rest! Bailey and I had a blast jumping in puddles, man that girl is go go go! Later in the afternoon we went into town again and ate at this really cute pizza place out on the patio. It had the most amazing views of the cliffs and we saw a ton of humming birds. We had a blast spending time there talking and they had a frisby golf course that the guys had fun playing on. We took a little walk up to goose necks which is amazing and showed Bailey how to hear her echo! Later Ed and Linda watched Bailey so that me, Erin, Chris, Adam and Jeramie could gather the dead wood on the ground and Chris and Adam got out their chainsaws and cut it all up for a gigantic fire that night. It was so pretty walking around in the mountains and we saw so many deer. That night we celebrated Adam's birthday with some yummy carrot cake and I ended up staying up way too late again!

Here is Adam waking up in the morning! How did we all know he would put his head out the doggy door?
Cade and his doggies! Cute little sweaters!

The last day we just cleaned up camp and got everything loaded to go home. We made one last stop at the little burger joint we always go to on our last day and I had the most delicious garden burger there. I hate going home! I love this camping trip every year and it really is so beautiful down there it's like heaven on Earth to me!

Poor Nell, Cade has a broken foot so she had to pump out their potty...ewwww!

The zoo

Last week Bailey and I met Linda and Dahlia at the zoo. The weather was perfect and Bailey was in heaven. She loves animals. She was making the monkey sounds to the monkeys and they were doing it back to her it was so funny! There were so many animals out that day and we had a lot of fun.

Here we are eating lunch...

Here is Linda with Bailey and Dahlia. Bailey is always obsessed with her jewelry!
